A Meeting In The Dark: A Loss Of Priorities



In "A Meeting in the Dark" by Ngugi wa Thiong`o a young boy is facing a serious situation and is depicted in the process. All the characters have opposing personalities. This story shows how a loss of priorities can result in tragedy, John’s his relationship with his father, his selfishness, actions toward Wahumu, and irresponsibility resulted in the loss of a life, perhaps two.
John’s relationship with his father is one that is fearful. In the beginning of the story John is thinking of how strict and judgmental his father, Stanley, is. He remembers why he fears his father: "he who had stopped his mother from telling him stories when he became a man of God… So he feared his father." ...

John was a very selfish young boy. He is concerned more about himself and what he is losing than what is important. He sneaks out of his hut to go to the Makeno Village to see the mother of his unborn child, Wahumu. As he walks along the path, he passes a woman. They engage in idle conversation, and he continues down the path. He feels proud for speaking to her and others noticing, until he realizes [concerning Wahumu and the baby] "Father will know. They will know." (100). The fear comes back. The fear of losing his status, the fear of his father, rekindled. "People who wished him well at the college" (101), he fears losing his opportunity for education.
John acts ashamed and unconcerned for Wahumu and the unborn child. He encounters her parents once he reaches one of the village huts. He waits for Wahumu as he chats with them. He ...
