Salsa, meaning sauce in Spanish, is as varied and diverse as its namesake. It is considered a true dance of the people: changing and adapting across different cultures and landscapes. It is played by artists in countries from Cuba to Japan, paired up with music styles from pop to jazz, and can range from being energetic and explosive to intimate and romantic. Today I will talk about two songs I listened to, through an online recording of Celia Cruz's "A night of Salsa". Celia Cruz was born with the name Úrsula Hilaria Celia de la Caridad Cruz Alfonso, in Havana, Cuba, 1925. She was known for her powerful voice and her rhythm-centric musical style. The song follows the usual happy, uplifting, fast paced tone of her music. The recording of the program showed hundreds of people jump on their feet and go into a dance frenzy when the song came up. Celia preformed the song with a small band consisting of many different instruments. The list of instruments is extensive and include congas, bongos, bass, piano, tres, a horn section, and the smaller hand-held percussion instruments: claves, guíro, and maracas. The multitude of instruments gives the song many different sounds that make a person want to party. The lyrics are meant to be happy and portray a younger Celia Cruz in the energetic streets of Havana, Cuba. The song title, translates to "the black women can dance" or "the black women has rhythm". In the middle of the song, Celia sings lyrics, that speak about how at the age of 20 she would dance through to the music of the streets and everyone would do the same."
