Lengel's confrontation with the girls another narrator could have described the same events but not as precise as Sammie's encounter. His feeling of wanting to make a change is an example of Sammie's thoughts and how what he was going through his mind. After he quits his job and walks outside, the reality really sets in on him and he knows that things will be definitely be different. The result of the story being told in Sammie's point of view is that it can be seen as sort of free lance, an inclusive look at his side of the story.
As the unreliable narrator, Sammie's function is valuable because the events that are taking place, such as the girls entering the grocery store, can be visualized as he did. Since Sammie is such an attentive viewer, making a visual of the girls' appearances and wardrobe was made simple.
