A Tired Heart - Chief Joseph's Battle

After a long battle, Chief Joseph and the Nez Perce` tribe surrendered to General Howard on February 26, 1877. The Nez Perce` tribe walked 1300 miles and were only thirty miles away from their destination, the Canadian border, when they surrendered. Chief Joseph says, “I really wish we never had to fight to begin with.”
General Howard didn’t really want to be apart of the fitting either, so making them surrender made him feel terrible. “I wish they were able to keep the land and didn’t lose so many tribe members, “ added Howard. In the past four months, they have traveled to escape the United States Army, they lost almost a fourth of their tribe due to medical and physical problems. Most died from the coldness from winter. Since they spent most of their time trying to dodge the army, they didn’t have much time to hunt. They were left with old, thin and raggy skins. The skinnier ones seemed to die faster. Indegel, a mother of seven children, said, “I lost my three oldest boys and my husband in the past two months.” She is only one of the tribes people who have lost many family members.
