In 1803, Britain passed their first antiabortion laws, which then became stricter throughout the century. Individual states in the U.S. began to outlaw abortion. By 1880, abortions were illegal in the U.S., except those ``necessary to save the life of a woman.'' But the practice of women's right to early abortion was embedded in U.S. society by then; OBGYNs continued to practice openly with public support, and they were not convicted by juries.

Abortion became a crime and a sin for several reasons. A trend of compassionate reform in the mid-19th century opened up liberal support for criminalization, because at that time abortion was a dangerous procedure done with makeshift methods, few antiseptics, and high death rates. Then, as now, making abortion illegal neither eliminated the need for abortion nor prevented its practice. Even though abortion is considered wrong, there are other instances where abortion is justified. The main two reasons are rape and incest. It is more than unfair that a woman should be forced to carry a baby that was conceived due to rape or incest. If the mother decided to keep the child, even though she would love the child, every time she looks upon him or her it would be a constant reminder of the horrible act that bought that child into the world. Also, incest can lead to retardation and handicaps.
