The nineteenth century was an era of great technological change that extremely changed the scope of tactics and strategy, the alteration was seen in what has been called "the first total war, the U.S. Civil." The consistent aid of war industry became crucial. The new tactical firepower created growth in accuracy and range of rifle. This caused many problems for example, placement of the artillery had to be moved back further behind the lines, and troops had begin fighting from trenches rather then an all out charge. because key routes from the South led to Harrisburg, Philadelphia, and Pittsburgh. In order to control these routes the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia invaded Pennsylvania in 1863. The confrontation at Gettysburg became one of the most decisive as well as one of the bloodiest battles of American history. Almost a third of the Union army in the Battle of Gettysburg was from Pennsylvania.

Mr. Meade (see picture One) was born in Cadiz, Spain, on the thirty-first of December 1815. He was a general for the Union in the U.S. Civil War and the winner at the Battle of Gettysburg. During the Civil War Mr. Meade commanded a band of soldiers from the Pennsylvania Reserves. Commander Meade was put in charge of the Army of the Potomac just a few days before the beginning of the Battle of Gettysburg.
