Rain is an essential ingredient for life. The water provided by rain allows all life on Earth to survive. It waters our crops, allowing us to grow food for us to eat and food for the animals we raise for meat and milk. This is called transboundary pollution. For awhile some people believed that by building high smoke stacks they would be sending the chemicals out of harms way. But all this did was push the emissions higher into the air, where they remain longer and travel further.

How Acid Rain Forms

This diagram shows one way that acid rain is formed. Two major causes of acid rain are the chemicals sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx). When large amounts of these two chemicals enter the atmosphere, they team up with moisture (H2O) to produde strong acids- sulfuric acid and ntiric acid. These acids, which are formed in the atmosphere, are very strong pollutants.
