The plants gradually clean the wastewater as it passes under their roots. Along with cleaning the water and being aesthetically pleasing, the plants also create a pleasant atmosphere as the water in the plants help in the calming of the harsh Texas climate. Although hidden out of view, the house is roofed with photovoltaic panels that produce all the energy needed by an average household. And just as it's positioned to utilize the sun, the house is also oriented to open up to catch gentle hilltop winds. A central breezeway, or dogtrot, uses these winds to help create an extremely pleasant environment indoors even without air conditioning.
