Bernard Williams in his essay Against Utilitarianism contends utilitarianism. Williams goes about doing this by describing two scenarios. He sheds light on the concept of negative responsibility and how it represents extreme impartiality. William then derives from these two scenarios that utilitarianism is flawed; by following utilitarianism personal integrity is desecrated.
William starts of by looking at the indifferent view of utilitarianism towards whether a result has been reached because of what a person has done, what a person has allowed to happen or what a person has encouraged. He talks ...

and has children, and he is not physically fit enough to do other jobs. He gets a job offered at a laboratory which researches chemical and biological warfare. George is opposed to chemical and biological warfare. The researcher that offers George the job tells him that he himself is opposed to the chemical and biological warfare. He also tells him that if George refuses to take the job, it might go to someone who is not opposed to he views resulting in more passionate research into chemical and biological warfare. William here in this example highlights the dilemma that according to the utilitarian school of thought George should take the job for the greater good, even if he is opposed to it. William also mentions a common objection to the example which is that the options have been restricted in this situation. He points out that, to many of us there would seem something wrong with George accepting the job. He highlights the link between this idea and personal integrity.
