Airfoils In Aviation - Term Papers

Airfoils In Aviation

Abstract

Under the field of aviation, airfoil is one of the many critical parts that affect cruising performance of an aircraft. Airfoil comes in different shapes and sizes that are based on the different designing variables, such as an airfoil's thickness, upper and lower camber thickness, size of curvature, angle of attack (AOA), etc. Because airfoils comes in different shapes and sizes in terms of how they are defined, the purpose of this project was to compare the lift and drag forces produce from each of the tested airfoils. At the same time, this project also identifies which airfoil was best and most efficient based on the resulting lift-to-drag ratio. Based on the Bernoulli's ...

"Wing Geometry", and FloEFD Pro tested the Wing Geometry in order to obtain the Lift and Drag Forces of the wing.

In this experiment, 5 distinctive airfoils were tested using the three softwares and were labeled alphabetically as Airfoil A, B, C, D, and E. Airfoil A is taken as the control since this is the first airfoil created by the "Wright Brothers". The files for each of the airfoils were downloaded from an online website as a "dat" file.

* Each airfoil's "dat" file was saved within a new Mathcad Worksheet while creating a Wing Definition for the selected airfoil.

* The new Mathcad Worksheet was transferred into the Creo Elements/Pro for creating a visual "Wing Geometry" for testing.

* The new "Wing Geometry" was tested using FloEFD Pro to obtain values of Lift and Drag Forces of the wing.

* Final step requires a new Mathcad Worksheet for finding the True "Lift and Drag Forces" of the Wing.

Tests on each airfoil were taken into 5 trials of testing. Results for ...

the wing of an aircraft produces enough upward lift in order for an airplane to fly. Thus, a wing is the most important part of an airplane.

Not all the wings are the same in terms of their shapes and sizes. Some wings are thin while others are thick. Some wings are short and wide while others are long and narrow. The Wright Brothers' made a simple, rectangular shaped wing for their aircraft without an airfoil. A wing can be described in many different ways. However, this project compares the lift and drag forces produced by different types of airfoils used in a wing design.

The idea of airfoil is based on the Bernoulli's Principle, proposed by a Dutch-Swiss mathematician ...
