The research being conducted consists of the differences in the portrayals of alcohol consumption in Ernest Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises, and F Scott. Fitzgerald's "The Lost Decade." The main focus of this research is going to be comparing and contrasting how alcohol affects the characters in each story, and the messages regarding alcohol the author is sending to the reader throughout the text. Although The Sun Also Rises is a lot longer than "The Lost Decade" in terms of page length, each story exhibits its own perspective of how alcohol consumption effects with their characters. "The Lost Generation," and being "lost" has something to do with their lost sense of reality. Like Barnes, his expatriate acquaintances are often drunk throughout the duration of the story. The characters who were involved in the war resort to drinking in order to escape from reality, and they are unable to cope with what the war has done to their lives (Pfeifer). Therefore, alcohol consumption hinders their sense of reality.
The group is always drinking when they are around each other. Whenever Jacob Barnes meets up with another character, the setting is in a venue that serves alcohol. If they find themselves in a situation where there is no access to alcohol, the mood changes in a negative way until they get their hands on a drink again (Ericson). The emphasis on alcohol is what the expatriates have in common and drinking is what they do together (Ericson). For the expatriates, drinking is a thing they like to do together because it helps take their minds off the past.
