Edith Wharton's Roman Fever is set in a quaint restaurant in Rome. The main characters Grace Ansley and Alida Slade are sitting on a terrace overlooking the Palatine and the Forum as they finish their lunches. Their daughters are heard as they are leaving to go on an outing with two prospective suitors. Their mothers begin are prompted into dialogue about their youth in Rome when their daughters suggest "leaving the young things to their knitting." the two women come to a startling conclusion that rocks both of them to the core, especially Alida Slade. She believed she was the winner in love and life when in fact, in a way, she lost in both.
When reading the dialogue between Alida and Grace, an interesting event can be observed. Near the beginning when they are discussing their daughters and their potential suitors, when mentioning the young men they are extremely vague. There is no thought put into describing them and they seem to merely be background information. Later, when the women are discussing their husbands, whether through inner or external dialogue, they refer to them in such a way that they seem to be ornaments to their wives. They even neglect to give their waiter a proper introduction to the reader. This style of writing begs the question: What happened to the men and why are they portrayed as background information? Why is Wharton writing in such a way?
