All Quiet on the Western Front presents a feeling of love as well a feeling of suffering for the soldiers. Their old lives had to come to a complete stop so they could serve their country to the fullest. Fighting and giving their all can become tedious and ultimately fatal for some, but at the same time it can be very fulfilling , especially when the soldiers are given privileges and little extras to keep their spirits up and their minds and bodies strong for the battlefield. Some of the men have nothing else to do with their lives except to enroll as a soldier, then they realize how important becoming a soldier becomes. By enlisting in the army, they chose to give up everyday pleasures. No matter how bad they want out, they’ve made a commitment and must stick to it. It doesn’t mean the soldier’s are treated badly or even that they didn’t like the army. It just means nothing else could come close to having the same importance in their lives at this point. Baumer also says, “We were trained in the army for ten weeks and in this time more profoundly influenced then by ten years at school” (21). For Baumer to say such things only proves to what extent the soldiers are being touched. Their lives have become meaningful. They’re taught how to be fighting machines, defending the land they call home. They couldn’t possibly attend school with out the freedom to do so. Thus, their country must be defended properly.
