This quote simply means that a well written book can spark someone’s imagination so much, that they are able to live through events which they in reality have not. They become so in touch with the books characters and story, that they can have a greater appreciation of the major themes of the book. I agree with the quote.

death of a close friend and a recruit whom he had comforted earlier, Paul went home finding that war had isolated him from his family and his childhood. With the return to his unit he again felt the presence of belonging. Soldiers had become his family. The mental anguish was again vividly displayed after Paul killed a French soldier; discovering that the soldier had a family, Paul slipped into a deep agony vowing to prevent such wars from again occurring. The depth of the emotions that soldiers experienced created a very believable example of the psychological impacts of war. By having the plot told by Paul, the reader can truly get inside his head and can relate to his character much better, and we get a better understanding of his actions and thoughts throughout all these tragedies.
In order to really grab the reader into the novel, the author must use tactics to keep their attention, therefor by the end of the book they will have carefully examined all the author has to say. ...
