Paul Baumer is a 19 year old German soldier in World War 1 who fights on the French front. He and several of his classmates had enlisted in the war voluntarily after listening to patriotic speeches from their teacher. These are all young men who know nothing about the war but what they’ve been told and heard. They are all scared in one way or another. And all they wish for is that they’ll return home.
