As time changes the American culture changes with it. We can see the changing culture as we look around and also look at our past. Our past is the only thing we have that tells us how our culture has changed. I have noticed this change by previewing three articles put out by the same company, but during different periods in our country’s past. This company is a cigarette company by the name of Camel. The first ad is from 1934, the second from 1944, and the third is from 1980. These advertisements portray their time periods with great detail, and also how the American culture has changed over this time period.

The Camel company goes on to use a celebrity to sell their product. This is one aspect in history that we still see today. The employment of famous athletes to promote the sale of products is as big today, if not bigger, as it was in 1934. Today we see athletes such as Michael Jordan and Shaquille O’neal promoting such products as athletic equipment to batteries. Back then, as well as today companies knew that consumers would purchase items that were promoted by athletes more than the products that were not. Another detail in the advertisement that depicts 1934 is the lack of technology. The ad is mostly cartoon, all except for the two minuscule pictures, therefore showing that their photographic methods were not as advanced as they are today. The last example of the period in which the ad was produced is seen by the characters ideology towards smoking. The characters in the ad are very ignorant when they discuss smoking.
