America's Early Identifiable Qualities

America has many distinct and identifiable qualities. Many of these qualities that influence the American identity began to emerge as early as the colonists’ settling. One of these qualities is the importance of freedom. Diversity has also been a classifying feature of America. American’s are and always have been willing to do anything for their country, even die.
The high priority of freedom is what originally brought the early settlers to America. In 1776, Thomas Payne wrote a pamphlet entitled “Common Sense”. Each country brought something different to the table, and all of the ethnicities combined created the diversity that we still see in America today. In the 1640’s, a visitor of the small village of New Amsterdam claimed to have heard an incredible 18 different languages spoken there. Unlike most countries at the time, America also offered religious diversity. Peter Kalm, a Swedish Botanist, observed a vast assortment of religions while traveling through Pennsylvania. He stated, “There were Roman Catholics, Presbyterians, Quakers, Methodists, Seventh Day men, Moravians, Anabaptists, and one Jew.”
