Amy Heckerling

Amy Heckerling was born in 1954 in the Bronx. She was born to Jewish parents, her father was a CPA and her mother was a bookkeeper. In her early teens, the family moved to queens. Heckerling developed an early proclivity towards the arts. Because of this, her family decided to send her to the prestigious High School of Art and Design in Manhattan. From high school, she went on to attend New York University where she studied under the famed Terry Southern, a noted screenwriter and satirist. Heckerling credits much of her success as a director to what she learned from Southern.

Joe Piscopo was a spoof on 1930’s gangster films. The film failed to catch fire at the box office but in later years, it has received a cult following and is very popular among certain audiences. The following year in 1985 she directed National Lampoons European Vacation starring Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo. This film was a sequel to Harold Remis’ 1983 film, National Lampoons Vacation. The film was a huge hit and grossed over 50 million dollars domestically. I have seen both films and I never would have thought that they were directed by different directors. They were both hilarious and had a very similar feel to them.
Amy Heckerling’s most famous hit was her 1989 release, Look Who’s Talking starring John Travolta, Kristie Allie, and Bruce Willis. The film is a romantic comedy in which Willis plays the voice of Kristie Allie’s baby son. This movie made close to 297 million dollars worldwide, and was Heckerling’s most rewarding film.
