Just recently I read something very special which I think a lot of people would also enjoy reading themselves. It is a short story by Eudora Welty entitled “ A Worn Path.” An intriguing black woman in her nineties by the name of Phoenix Jackson sets off on a journey of life. Living ten miles away from the nearest city, Natchez, Mississippi, she goes through obstacles that show the will she has to complete her journey. Phoenix Jackson is making this journey to Natchez to get medication for her sick grandson. a field of dead corn. There she comes before a scarecrow that she mistakes for death. She laughs at herself for thinking that the scarecrow was a ghost. Continuing on her path she bends down to drink from a spring of water. Being unaware a dog jumps on top of her and she lands in a ditch. A white hunter encounters her and helps her out. As they converse a nickel falls from the white man’s pocket. Phoenix picks up the nickel when the white man does not notice. Moments later he accidentally points a gun at Phoenix and asks her if she is scared. “No, sir, I seen plenty go off closer by, in my day, and for less than what I done,” she replies. Finally, she reaches town and goes up the tower of stairs marking her triumph. These stairs bring her to the doctor’s office. A nurse gives her the medication, and an attendant gives her five pennies. She now has a dime, and with this money she intends to buy her grandson a paper windmill.
