An Interpretation Of Franz Kafka’s Parable “The Trees.”



After reading and rereading this short, yet deeply symbolic, parable several times, I have come to the conclusion that Kafka is equating the two aspects of illusion and reality. The parable seems to discredit our own senses by equating these two aspects. The illusion being how the trees smoothly rest on the surface of the snow and the reality being the trees’ firm attachment to the earth. Kafka is giving a subjective interpretation of an objective reality. However, while illusion and reality are held identical, the reader’s perception of reality and illusion are unique. Each and every person who reads this parable will interpret it in such a way that it will only relate to that person. ...

that is reading the parable, yet it seems to be reflective of the experiences of the narrator and no one else.
These interpretations, though complicated and seemingly apparent, do not portray the atmosphere of the parable as adequately as I felt after I read it over and over again. Perhaps in the Parable’s simplicity I could be able to interpret something a little more simple and relative to the human viewpoint. Or rather than relating to human viewpoint, it might be easier to relate the parable to changes in human character. The trees could possibly represent the human character or personality. I believe that Kafka is saying that when dealing with humans, and trying to get to know them, do not expect any consistencies, because not only can reality be deceiving, reality can also change. Even if people are “rooted” to the ground, for example, in their opinions, Kafka could be saying that it is possible for these people to change.
