Marvel and Mystery

Many poets use various poetic schemes and elements to convey their message. Harlem Renaissance writer Countee Cullen’s uses many elements throughout his poem, “Yet Do I Marvel”, to better deliver his thoughts. Throughout the poem, Cullen also alludes to a myth to better deliver his message. His poem can be viewed in various aspects to better analyze it but the continuous theme is of the mysteriousness of God, and how He (God) is unwilling to share the secrets by answering the speaker's questions.
Poets often use myths to make allusions so that the reader can better understand the context of the poem and also how it relates to the myth itself. Many allusions are present in this myth ...

unending stairway or repeatedly rolling a large boulder up a hill. By understanding the context of the myth within the poem, we can conclude that the speaker is much like the Greek figures as he is trying to attain what he wants but will never be able to get it. The use of imagery using the Greek mythology enriches the poem by connecting the reader and also by developing the overall theme.
Tone is the way in which a poet makes his statement. It also conveys the writers’ attitude toward his subject. Cullen uses a variety of tones such as confusion, anger and sarcasm to portray his attitude toward the subject. It is not clear if the narrator is Cullen but we can assume that it is written from a black poet’s perspective.
We can assure that the speaker believes in God by referring to the very first line in the poem, “I doubt not God is good, well meaning, kind” (1). Although he affirms his belief in God, the poet still has his doubts and confusions about the world, and ponders ...
