life. Scarlett often challenges the traditional roles of women in the novel. She has her own mind and does not see herself as different from men and doesn’t feel like behaving differently in front of them “I’m tired of everlastingly being unnatural and never doing anything I want to. I’m tired of saying “how wonderful you are” to fool men who haven’t got one-half the sense I’ve got and I’m tired of pretending I don’t know anything so men can tell me things and feel important while they’re doing it”(chapter 5). Determination defines Scarlett and drives her to achieve everything she desires by any means necessary. Before the war all her efforts are spent in being the belle of the county and having all the men wrapped around her finger. Although she is not always interested in the men around her she still always likes them to be interested in her. After the war, it is this determination that fuels her to work hard to keep starvation at bay and to keep Tara safe.
