The Great Depression altered the American social fabric in many ways during the 1930s. The erection of a welfare state, labor reforms, agricultural reforms, and the general atmosphere of the Depression changed the way people viewed themselves, the government, and the lives that they lived. The Depression altered the social situation of America in ways that affected both their occupations and their attitude toward life.
The Social Security Act created by Franklin D. Roosevelt was the first major social change in America towards the creation of a Welfare State. It provided monthly social security payments for the elderly, workmen's compensation for those out of work because of on-the-job ...

A huge amount of unemployed population now had an opportunity to receive federal money without losing their dignity or being forced to accept charity. Many men had committed suicide or were deeply depressed as their role of the family supporter was unable to be fulfilled. Some left home, abandoning their families, who would also be cared for by the government subsidies. The Works Administration provided temporary jobs for men of different ages. America was beautified and cleaned by these toilers who were given some hope by the jobs provided. Lives of many families were significantly changed.
