Noir films originated more than 50 years ago. The films intrigued many people and set a new standard for movies that is still enjoyed by many people today. These movies may still intrigue viewers for a variety of reasons.
The reasons for noir films such as The Maltese Falcon and The Big Sleep sustaining interest for so long are the techniques used in the two movies; specifically, some of the techniques used in the two movies include use of shadows/translucency and dark areas, deserted places, and quiet talking.

Keeping the viewer on the edge of their seat plays a key role in why these movies are so popular even though they are over 50 years old. Film noir movies might also keep attracting people because noir films are not regularly shot today for the mainstream movie theatres and the lingering intrigue about black and white, good 7and evil and night and day contained within each movie.
The uses of dark areas, deserted places, and quiet talking create a scary or even unsafe atmosphere and make the viewer wonder why there are no other characters in the scene. In the noir film, The Maltese Falcon, several dark areas are visited. In one such scene, Sam gets a cab and goes to a house where Ms. O'Shaughnessy supposedly is held hostage and might be in danger.
