Appearances are deceptive in Twain’s The adventures of Huckleberry Finn. A formidable critic of conventional society, Tawain develops a masterpiece exposing the Hypocrisy of American frontier society of the 1840’s.Among the important discrepancies between illusion and reality in this novel are The widow Douglas, the Grangerfords and Shepherdsons, and Huck are not always as they appear.
The widow Douglas appears to be a Christian like woman but that is not the whole truth. The Grangerfords and the Shepherdsons are soul enemies and the two families have been feuding for years but instead of settling it as gentlemen they go to violence as the answer. Violence in this case does not help the situation but instead makes it worse and the two families become even angrier with each other. They were fighting one day and the next Sunday they are all at church praying and “ the men took their guns along” (137 ). These two families act the opposite from their gentleman appearance as aristocrats.
