Pathology:
An appendectomy is a surgical procedure performed on a patient due to complications with the appendix. This complication includes: inflamed, infected, or rupture of the appendix. "Carcinoid tumors of the appendix may also occur, but they are rare (WebMD)." These complications have no known affect on a patient's body besides pain and discomfort; and if ruptured, infection may also occur and the case becomes emergent.

located in the central or right lower quadrant of the abdomen; as well as nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, constipation or diarrhea. If a blood test is performed, "An elevated white blood cell count and fever are also common. Physical examination reveals tenderness especially on rebound or a palpable abdominal mass in the area of the appendix (AST. 2007. Pg.434)."
Other structures involved during an appendectomy procedure include: the large intestine, the cecum- the portion above the appendix connecting to the colon. The muscles that are cut through are the external and internal oblique as well as the transversus abdominus. Layers involved are the skin, subcutaneous fat, fascia and peritoneum.
Equipment/Supplies:
Equipment used during an appendectomy include: suction apparatus, electrosurgical unit, sequential compression device and headlamp if available. A minor instrument set is used for this procedure.
