Apples and Oranges: A Look

Film and literature are like apples and oranges. They both are fruit, but taste completely different. The film and the short story "An Occurrence at Owl Bridge" have many similarities and differences. The way one reads a book and watches film are all but a matter of orientation and interpretation. Some will say film will never ever be a patch on the power of the imagination throughout the pages of a book. It all depends on the individual and the image created from the content.

able to set himself free from the rope tied around his hands and neck. A soldier fires and misses his shot as Farquhar is being traveled down stream by the current. He finally gets to shore where he finds a road to take him home. Once he arrives home, his wife greets him at the end of the white path. First, film and literature have very different purposes. Joy Boyum states:

Film isn't simply a language of images. Film is a language of sound-whether natural sound, music, or as in the case of literature works. Remove the sound track from a film and you still have a movie; remove the visuals and you have something on the order of radio. (22)

Joy has a good point here. "An Occurrence at Owl Creek" is a silent film. I believe this was the best way to make the short story a film because the uses of imagery are immense in the short story. If sound ...
