Was Augustine correct in believing that concordia, or "oneness of heart" was the essence of friendship and the source of true peace, and that it is possible at every level of society, as the Reverend Donald X. Burt, O.S.A., claimed in his book, Augustine Through the Ages? Perhaps. But Burt's simple statement-and the writings of others who have contributed criticism of Augustine-fail to point out is that it is possible for concordia, however perfect, to be limited in scope.

On the other hand, many commentators on Augustine's work believe that ancient Greece did embody concordia, in much the way Augustine meant it. Therefore, concordia would be truly the root of peace-even in a pre-Christian society.
This idea is mentioned, in fact, most vehemently in a contribution by Elaine Pagels to The City of God: A Collection of Critical Essays. Pagels, throughout her career as a writer on theology and author of The Gnostic Gospels, has rarely failed to produce controversy, and her essay cited here is no exception. (The Gnostic Gospels is a book about the 'lost' gospels not included in the New Testament as modern Christian churches define it.)
