In Dark Ages, in which the poem Beowulf was written, people needed something to believe in. They needed something to cling to. Although religiously they believed in God, they still felt that they had to cling on to their human heroes. They thought highly of them. For example, Beowulf was mightier than all other men. He was larger than life. The people who lived in the Dark Ages, in the time when this story was written, believed in saviors. They gave Beowulf the strength of 30 men. In fact, he sounds very much like Hercules, a man with the strength of a God. that religiously, in the Dark Ages, people who had felt that there was no other way to slay the demon prayed to idols and sought omens. Therefore, it can be assumed that some of the people had embraced God as a good spiritual entity. People who prayed to idols and the devil were not well esteemed.
However during that time, Germanic people that although man was the center of life, there also existed a place outside of man's realm where the gods existed. There was also an area (outside the place where the Gods were located) where evil lived. The evil entities of that time included giants and demons.
The poem also provides evidence that aristocrats were greatly honored during this period. For example, when Beowulf first arrives to fight, the soldiers notice his clothing and everyone assumes that he is royalty.
