How does this text make the audience feel?

Kill the possum, written by James Moloney is a confronting novel aimed for an audience mostly of young adults. It lets you in on a secret where young people are trapped in pain and impotency, and the novel allows the audience to relate to the some of the same emotions as the characters endure. Such as anger, frustrations, horror, hate and overall the audience becomes disturbed. The themes of murder and abuse have been vividly explored in this text and emphasised through the use of allusions, metaphors, intertextuality, vivid imagery and similes. deriving from such verbal abuse. Ian is able to make the characters feel like ‘shit’, like nothing, and the audience feels sympathetic to him. It’s commonly spoken (out of this text) that, “Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never harm me.” This is quite untrue in Kill in the Possum; the characters take the words with them wherever they go, and it’s these words that drive them to a devastating tragedy. Abuse in this novel strikes the audience cold and hard with its barbarity, making the audience feel disturbed.

Within Kill the Possum Moloney creates anger and frustration through the theme of murder. Within the theme of murder an anagram is used to form a kind of intertextuality. The character’s surnames Beal and Kane can be eluded to the fact that ‘Beal’ can be rewritten as ‘Abel, and that ‘Kane’ sounds like ‘Cain’.
