We are brought into the world not knowing ‘what lies behind us and what lies before us, and they are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.’ In veracity, our DNA composes the individuals we are, although additionally, nature and nurture affect our personality heavily. As a species, we define our existence by the people we meet and interact with as well as the acts we engage in and do not engage in. Belonging is primal and fundamental to our sense of happiness and wellbeing. As humans, we need to belong; to one another, our friends, families, to our culture and country, but also to the world.

As individuals in society, we differentiate others by claiming we are ‘dissimilar’ or ‘diverse’, and therefore, sometimes don’t belong to groups. If we are born with a genetic medical condition or illness, disease or disability, we inevitably disperse ourselves away from belonging to these types of groups as observers believe they don’t have anything in common. However, these individuals form their own groups. But do they feel an underlying sense of not belonging to the larger community within? These individuals do not choose to have these health issues; they inherit this from their DNA and mutations occur, yet this gives us a reason to separate ourselves? And does it give us a right to make these individuals feel as if they don’t belong to a group? Therefore, when individuals don’t belong, they lose a sense of happiness.
