In the course of Beloved by Toni Morrison, Sethe undergoes a journey from a woman whose only identity is drawn from the fact that she is a mother, to the beginnings of identifying herself as a human being. To Sethe, the future was a matter of “keeping the past at bay.” She is a frustrated woman who finds no comfort in the society until she faces her past. There is a need for humankind to cope with the past in order to progress to the future.

(unsuccessfully) from the plantation. Sethe was breaking, but not yet broken. The emptiness of Sethe’s relationship with her mother only increased Sethe’s motherly obsession for her own children. As a parent with two kids and another one on the way, Sethe needed to escape slavery. She felt she had to place her children outside the horror of slavery, even if it meant taking their lives.
A life was lost. Sethe refused to allow herself and her children to be dragged back into the evil of slavery. Like the woman in Still I Rise by Maya Angelou, Sethe wanted “out of the huts of history’s shame” and “up from a past that’s rooted in pain”. After successfully escaping, Sethe was naturally a slave fugitive. And the whites found her. Desperately, she was able to kill her third child as an act of saving it from slavery. Her desire to keep her children from receiving a white man’s mark was stronger than her humanity. Sethe killed her baby girl because she wanted to save the baby from slavery, ...
