An epic is a long narrative poem about the adventures of a hero. The hero is a figure of high social status and historical importance. An epic hero is a brave and courageous warrior, is chivalrous, is able to fight enemies with pride and not afraid to die for his country and people, and puts the welfare of others before his own. An epic hero generally has many descriptive names. In the epic, Beowulf, the main character, Beowulf possesses these traits that make him an epic hero.

off the monster’s arm. Beowulf then fights against Grendel’s mother, who is seeking revenge for the death of her son. He is able to kill her by slashing her neck with a sword that can only be lifted by a person as strong as Beowulf. Beowulf is able to easily carry the head with ease; however, it takes the combined strength of four men to carry the same head back to the mead hall. “From the sea-cliff’s brim the warriors bore/The head of Grendel, with heavy toil;/Four of the stoutest, with all their strength,/ Could hardly carry on swaying spear/Grendel’s head to the gold-decked hall.”( l. 1108-1112) This quotation shows Beowulf’s amazing physical strength, a key trait of an epic hero.
Beowulf possesses chivalry through honor. Beowulf shows great respect toward the Geat King and honors him with all of his heart. When the king dies, Beowulf is asked to assume the throne.
