Black Elk Speaks is a play about the history of the relations between American Indians and Europeans from the first contacts to the present. My first thoughts of being assigned to attend the show were not very positive. I expected to endure an evening of hell with my sanity preserved solely by intermission and the finale. I am in no way a “history buff” so the content of the play did not appeal to all of my senses. I enjoyed certain aspects of the play, rather than the entire production.

to cast Indians in every role. Martinez even double and triple cast to accommodate for the many roles. This is a common occurrence in theater productions. I was not very impressed with the performances as different characters. It was difficult to distinguish one role from another. The Indians were dressed so similarly that it was difficult to tell them apart. When one Indian changed characters to a different Indian I often could not tell. Another problem was that names were not spoken out loud directly to the characters. This created mass confusion in my mind. I understood the stories, but I often had trouble deciding who the characters were. The directorial concept of this production was interesting. Martinez played on the horrible things that happened to the Indians. She used many different tools to get her ideas across to the audience. She used a little girl as one of the Indians. This made the killings more dramatic. She also made the Indians seem very helpless in ...
