Book of Haggai Summary

The community or people in Judah were struggling to find their identity or their reason for life during the reign of the Persian King Darius. Their temple to God had been destroyed and they had lost their statehood. The Governor Zerubbabel and High Priest Joshua needed to provide political, economic, and religious leadership to the survivors of the destruction of Babylonia. Those who were exiled live, as mentioned before, in Judah. Haggai, the author, was briefly minister, from August to December of the year 520 B.C. Haggai enforced and backed the idea of a restoration of the Temple that was destroyed.

day of the seventh month, the Lord spoke to Haggai. He told him to speak to the governor, the high priest, and to the remnant of the people. Haggai gave words of encouragement from the Lord, saying that they have improved very much, and that they need to keep working. The Lord said that soon he would shake the heavens and the earth, the sea and the dry land. He said He would shake all of the nations, so that the treasures of other nations will come into this one. He will fill this house with glory. He says that this houses glory will be greater than the previous one, most likely he means greater than the first temple that was destroyed.

In the second year of Darius, and the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, the Lord spoke through Haggai the prophet again. Haggai wanted the remnant people who were building the temple to reflect upon the work they have been doing. Haggai the prophet told the people "From the day on which the temple was founded, reflect!" For a second time ...
