Boston in 1823, he promised great change for the marketplace and for Boston (Quincy Jr. 42). The creation of what would become known as Faneuil Hall, would later lead to Josiah Quincy reforming Boston’s market area, making it the great city that it is today.
In the 1740s the great debate concerning Boston’s market area began to grow exceedingly passionate and violent (Quincy Jr. 13). The citizens were concerned about fair pricing and trade in a marketplace. Then in 1740, Peter Faneuil offered to personally donate the market house to the city (Faneuil Hall Records). Peter was a very wealthy Boston merchant, who had inherited a majority of his uncle’s wealth after his passing. Peter had lived with his uncle Andrew following the death of his parents, Benjamin and Anne. He had begun working for his uncle at the age of 19, and had been promised the wealth as long as he remained celibate. Then in 1761 tragedy struck the hall when a horrific fire broke out, completely engulfing Faneuil Hall in flames. Only the outer brick walls remained of the structure. The town voted to rebuild the hall with more fire safe materials and as little wood as possible to prevent it from happening again in the future (Quincy Jr. 21).
