In the play Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare, Brutus is a respected senator in Rome. Everyone knows that he is Caesar's good friend and is seen as an honorable man. Brutus is approached by Cassius who pretends to be his friend so he will join him in his plot. Cassius and some other Romans were planning to assassinate Caesar; they claimed it was for the good of Rome and that it was absolutely necessary for it to be done. In the previous scene Cassius was manipulating Brutus into believing that Caesar being crowned was bad for Rome’s future. than what Brutus has personally experience throughout his friendship with Caesar. He then goes on and finds logic into supporting his plan on joining the conspiracy for the good of the people of Rome.
Brutus goes ahead and compares Caesar to an “adder”. Just as how a bright day may “bring forth the adder”, Caesar being crowned may bring Rome disaster. With his reference to the bright sun bringing forth dangerous creatures, he is alluding to the fact that Caesar, once crowned, may change his nature completely and become a dangerous ruler. Brutus compares Caesar to an “adder that craves wary walking”. By saying that he is like an “adder” he is saying he not only evil but that can also bring evil to them. Also like an adder he can attack at any minute because it is within their nature to bring dismay.
