CAD/CAM Systems - School Essays

CAD/CAM Systems

In today’s high tech computer age much is being said about what is bigger,
better and faster, leading one to the question, is all this expense really
worth it? The software and hardware companies, as well as the users
involved, pay a high price to be in our manufacturing markets today. So,
are really paying off for us? Are they really worth all
the hype? In answer to the profound question of cost versus profit, let’s
take a look at CAD/CAM systems of the 21st century, and see what they are
and what they do (Childs 176).

In general, a CAD/CAM system is a software package loaded into a stand
alone computer, workstation, that can either be driven by a personal
computer, or a high end ...

as solid shape, as if it were, for example a
solid piece of steel All data concerning its shape is known by the
computer software, and can be manipulated in more of an automated way
rather than every surface or every wire frame requiring individual shaping
(Unigraphics 1-1).

CAD/CAM software also creates N/C Programs for manufacturing. But, first
let’s define what CAM (Computer Aided Manufacturing) is, and how it is used
in the industry. CAM software is generally used for the creation of N/C
(Numerical Controlled) programs. N/C programs control machines that make
parts, such as rocket parts, car parts, and airplane parts. The CAM system
uses the CAD model to drive a tool, like a drill, through a hole in the
model. The N/C program is generated on the CAD/CAM system, then loaded
into a machine, that can drill and mill, thus producing a part per CAD/CAM
design (Unigraphics 1-2).
CAM systems have three basic types of operations for N/C
programming. First, are the drilling ...
