After watching The Candidate, one can understand the reasons political candidates must participate in campaigns. The primary goal of any candidate is to get elected into the office of which one is running for. In recent years the extent to which nominees go to and the price they are willing to pay in a campaign is costly.
The Candidate is based onthe election of a politician. Robert Redford plays Jim McKay, a Californian lawyer, asked to run for U.S. Senate. McKay was chosen as a nominee because of his credibility, integrity, name, and his good looks. These characteristics are necessary for candidatessecuring a political office. or previous seat of office. Many individuals today do not have the initiative to research a candidate's platform or his prefence on issues. Jim McKay was eventually elected with no political experience but was elected based on his good looks and communication skills. In the most recent presidential election between the incumbent Bill Clinton and Bob Dole, one of the main reasons Dole did not win the election was because of his appearance. Dole was over seventy years old and the public voters did not see this as an advantage. Neither did Dole possess the charisma like that of Clinton.
McKay runs as a democratic nominee on the issues that he feels are important to society. In the beginning he consented to running for senator only if he could "say what he wanted and do what he wanted without restrictions."
