The first stage of a typical bildungsroman novel includes an emotional loss and a period of awkwardness for the main character, usually ending in a setting forth on a journey alone. The death of Allie causes Holden to enter in multiple periods of awkwardness. The first one I will discuss is his way of looking and judging other people. Holden saw every adult as a phony whether they were or they were not. Children are the only ones that he actually considers innocent. As the book goes along Holden refers to many people as phony. He doesn't just refer to people he also refers to places and things as well. When talking to his sister he says â€œ...It was one of the worst schools I ever went to. it was full of phoniesâ€(Salinger 167). This is an example in the book where Holden is explaining to his sister why pencey was a bad school, and pretty much his reasoning is that they are a bunch on phonies at it.
