be able to come and go as they please. While the fish represent the difficulties of the adults and their inability to choose as they please, by being frozen in the lake and being unable to leave. This foreshadows that Holden will change from a child into an adult and will face some type of difficulty in the future and will be unable to run away and will have to face it.

4. Analysis: In this passage the symbols of the ducks and the fish represent the essences of Holden's character because at the moment Holden is focused on the ducks, his current state of mind and representation of the freedom children have. But the taxi driver becomes focused not on the ducks, but on the fish; the adults and their inability to choose what they want. This foreshadows that although Holden is currently in the mindset of a child he will later on become an adult, a fish, and will become unable to make the carefree decisions that he was previously allowed to take.
