Character Personalities In The Canterbury Tales



Geoffrey Chaucer creates an amazing use of satire by exaggerating his characters' conduct in The Canterbury Tales. Chaucer's characters reveal their true personalities and set up numerous situations in tales told to make their characteristics more than obvious. The author of "Everyman" presented moralities by way of ironic scenes in a morality play in which he expressed moral values that he may have felt necessary for a proper functioning society and to maintain both physical and spiritual well being. Both authors use ironic occurrences, creating a story that gets it's point across easily.

To think that anybody would bluntly tell of their deceitful ways to people that confided and believed in everything they said is another tactic used by Chaucer to exaggerate what he is trying to get his audience to see. He provides many exaggerated examples of the Pardoner deceiving, fooling and lying to the people throughout "The Pardoner's Tale."
"Everyman" is a play teaching of moral values. The author mainly uses irony to show what he may feel as necessary to prove of the things you've done before giong to heaven. Everyman calls upon Knowledge, his Five Wits, Goods, Friendship, Kindred and Cousin at different points in the story to help show what he's done. He soon finds it ironic that, of the things he felt closest to him, he isn't able to rely on any during the times he needs them most. Knowledge then tells him to call upon his Good Deeds, only for Everyman to coincidentally discover they are too weak because he's never used them. ...
