Characterization of Hedda Gabler

What does it mean to have courage? People described to have this trait are fearless of anything in their path, and have the character and grit to overcome the obstacles they face without resorting to others means of “beating the around bush”. To describe Hedda, a victorian era housewife, as courageous is maybe the furthest possibility. In his play, Hedda Gabler, Henrik Ibsen characterizes Hedda as cowardly to emphasize the thematic importance of personal freedom for individual fulfillment. Hedda is greatly fearful for the implications that may rise from defiance of the societal restrictions and normalities of her time.

Hedda is at the same state of happiness as before the honeymoon. This is revealing of the way societal standards have an effect on Hedda. For Hedda to enter a marriage accepting its terms and conditions consistent with all marriages in this society, where it is clear that her life is meant to revolve around a man she doesn't love, shows Hedda is more concerned about finding acceptance as a typical housewife than doing what could reward her with greater self fulfillment, done by placing the control of life in her own hands; which would mean for her to leave her husband.
