In the 1980’s America was at war, it was not a traditional war where we were committing troops, but more of an investment of money and supplies to defeat the soviets from invading countries and spreading their ideas around the world. Although many did not know how and what we were doing, most American’s knew that America wanted to stop communism from spreading at all attempts. In the movie “Charlie Wilson War” director Mike Nichols wanted to portray what was happening in the 1980’s and how a long-term congressman succeeded to defeat the soviets.

as toys, Charlie Wilson knew he had to lend a helping hand and bring attention to this in Washington.
Congressman Wilson was on one of the most powerful committees in Congress, the Appropriations Committee. When he returned to the United States he knew the only way to help were through covert operations. Wilson was able to convince the Appropriations Committee to double the budget to help fight off the soviets in Afghanistan.
Charlie was then introduced to Gust Avrakotos, played by Philip Seymour Hoffman. Gust Avrakotos was a CIA agent who was abrupt and didn’t hold back his hatred for the Soviets and communism. With the three involved; Charlie, Joanne and Gust, they were an inexorable team.

film was not just film on a Hollywood set, but was film in Joanne Herring actual home and Morocco for the setting in Afghanistan; being able to utilize these settings allowed the audience to be more captivated in the movie and let them be able to picture the events as they took place. If these setting were not used I do not believe that the audience would have been able to see the historical implications that happen because of Congressman Wilson and his team.
