Cheerleading: Sport or Activity?

For years, there has been a controversial debate about if cheerleading is classified as a sport or an activity.

On one side of the view, people do think that cheerleading can be considered a sport. Cailyn Lyons, captain of the blue cheerleading squad at Central Bucks South says, "Cheerleading is definitely a sport. Our teams work so hard and our effort really shows off with stunts and routines."

Some people feel as though only competitive cheerleading can be called a sport. The reasoning behind this is that when cheerleaders compete, they are awarded scores and points. Also, the focus is only on the cheerleaders, ...

of training, workouts, and preparation go into each routine.

Also, a lot of cheerleaders will argue that they have to lift people into the air, which can be harder than lifting weights.

Cheerleaders will also defend cheerleading by saying that they have to be in shape in order to do their routines. Gymnastics is also incorporated into cheerleading routines, which is another aspect of cheerleading.

On the other side of this controversy, people do not think that cheerleading is a sport at all. Matt James, a student at South, says, "Cheerleading is just an excuse for girls to jump around and get exercise."

People argue that cheerleading is not a sport because there is no real object of it. You don't use a ball to play with, and when cheerleading is not competitive, then you can't necessarily "win".

Other people think that cheerleading is just for show. The evidence to support this claim would be cheerleader's tight outfits, big hair, and big smiles, and dance ...
