Events and experiences in one’s life can alter one’s perspective on life. In Anton Chekhov’s “The Bet,” the protagonist, the lawyer, goes through a transformation as a result of his incarceration. From the beginning of the story until the end of his confinement, the lawyer undergoes a metamorphosis, starting as an optimistic, impulsive, young man, becoming a lonely, despondent prisoner, and ultimately, emerging as a wise, educated philosopher.

replies, “I’ll take the bet, but I would stay not 5 but 15 years”(160). The lawyer does not even reason about what he has just committed to. Furthermore, he raises the stakes of the proposal as a result of his confidence in winning the bet.
Although he begins his confinement secure that he will be victorious, the lawyer gradually becomes very despondent over the course of his imprisonment. During his confinement, the lawyer is not able to interact with other people. He is only allowed to have an instrument, books, wine, and tobacco. In the beginning he constantly plays piano and reads light novels. Then, he begins reading classics and asks for wine. He can be heard crying or talking to himself and gradually stops reading. He writes all night and tears up what he has written the next morning.
Eventually, he begins to study different languages, philosophy, and history. He writes a letter to the banker in six different languages. After the tenth year he begins reading the Gospel, ...
