This story takes place at Ream, a Cambodian village. It was April
17, 1975 when a baby was born to Soka, Sundara’s aunt. When the baby was in
the wound of Soka, Sundara was sent to help. Sundara did not want to leave
her family, but she had to go. Now she was in Phnom Penh. Phnom Penh was
okay to live until the day the Khmer Rouge came. Sundara, the baby, Soka,
Naro, Ravy, and Grandmother had to fleet off to a boat. They did not know
where the boat was going but they were gone. They were all right as long as
they were away from the Khmer Rouge.

Main Characters

One of the main characters was Sundara. She took care of the whole

him. Mr. and Mrs. McKinnon are Jonathan’s parents. Mr. McKinnon saved
Ravy’s life when he came to America. Sundara also teaches him Cambodian
language, so he can go to Cambodia.

Minor Characters

Naro is Soka’s son yet he is the head of the family. Grandmother
makes sure that Sundara does what she is supposed to. Moni is like an older
sister to Sundara. Moni knows what it is like to be in America and have to
follow the same ways. Chamroeun was Sundara’s boyfriend back home. He died
when trying to steal a potato to eat. Mayoury is Sudara’s younger sister
that was found and was going to be sent to Oregon. Pon is Sudara’s little
cousin. Cathy is Jonathan’s girlfriend to Jonathan notices Sudara.

Plot

In the beginning of this book Sundara was sent to Phnom Penh to
help her aunt with her newborn. While she was in Phnom Penh the Khmer Rouge,
the Communist, came. They had to leave because they would be killed or
captured. Since Naro had connections he got his family on the ship ...
