Clarissa Harlow Barton, otherwise known as Clara Barton, was born on Christmas day in the year of 1821 in Oxford, Massachusetts. She was the youngest in the family of five children and a daughter to abolitionists, meaning that her parents wanted to do away with human slavery. Clara was raised in a very stressful environment; every member of her family would have massive breakdowns and break into fits of rage. Since she was very timid and had a lisp, she was often teased by her family, too.

of being shy worsened and her parents had to pull her out of the school. When Clara was eleven, her brother fell off a roof of a barn, he wasn’t expected to live, but she stayed by his side and administrated medications and comfort throughout his duration of illness.
After being well educated all throughout her childhood, she was able to start teaching at the age of seventeen. Teaching also helped her get over her fear of being shy. She was able after six years of teaching, to open the first public school in the United States in the state of New Jersey. Eventually she quit her career of being an educationist to young children and moved to Washington D.C to become a clerk to the U.S Patent Office. However, the government didn’t approve of a female worker in a government office so she was demoted to a copyist. She returned home for a little bit, but then returned to Washington D.C.
