It is not exactly what you would here on MTV, but classical music is the most popular music around the world and has inspired more musicians than any other type of music. Classical music consists of five different genres: the symphony, the string quartet, the sonata, the concerto, and the opera. These five genres have been perfected over time by three major composers.
The symphony is by far the most popular genre to come from the classical era. It is instrumental music for a symphony orchestra that consists of several movements. A quartet does not have a conductor like the symphony does, but they didn't need one because they weren't intended to be played for many people. Mozart and Haydn were known for having "jam sessions" in Mozart's apartment. An rarely known fact is that Haydn is the creator of this genre, not Mozart.
Sonatas are multi-movement works that are for a solo instrument or an instrument with accompaniment that uses different forms of music. Many classical composers like Mozart and Haydn wrote many of these for the piano for their students to practice, needless to say, they were not intended for public performance. Beethoven was the only major composer known to ever play a sonata in concert. The singer and songwriter, Sting, performed and wrote the song Every Breath You Take in a form popularly found in sonatas called rondo form.
