In order to understand the whole cochlear implant controversy, one must first understand how they work. Although it may seem that the cochlear implant is merely a high tech hearing aid, it is much more complicated than that. The basics of all hearing aids are the same, they are worn externally and it “amplifies the sound and directs it into your ear canal” (Mayo Clinic). The sound is then processed by ear and brain without any further assistance. A cochlear implant is not considered a hearing aid; they “are electrical devices that work by converting acoustic sounds into electrical pulses that stimulate the auditory nerve directly.
